Lesson 1.1 Understanding DLD: What It Means for Your Child

Welcome to Module 1.1!

This module is about understanding what a Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) diagnosis means for your child. This initial step in the journey can impact people in many different ways and my hope is that you feel deeply supported as you move forward.

DLD is an invisible communication disorder that affects a child's ability to learn, understand, and use spoken language. It can also impact reading and writing skills. I want all parents to remember that your child is an incredible individual with amazing potential who is so much more than the challenges they may face. The purpose of this course is to equip you with knowledge and insights to empower your child to become an active learner.

Throughout the course, I encourage you to reflect on your experiences and set realistic expectations. Together, we will explore ways for you to actively engage with the material so you can effectively support your child's growth.

Every family's journey with DLD is unique, and my compassionate approach aims to uplift and encourage you. Together, we'll discover tools and strategies to nurture your child's communication skills and overall well-being.

Let's embark on this transformative learning experience together and unlock your child's bright future!

Reflection Questions

1.) How did you initially react to your child's DLD diagnosis, and what emotions and thoughts did you experience? How have those emotions possibly changed since the diagnosis?

2.) What are some of the common challenges you have noticed in your child's educational journey and social interactions due to DLD? Where do you feel your child needs the most support?
